Description:
A glacier dammed lake outburst from Summit Lake has ended on the
Salmon River near Hyder. The river crested at around 26.2 ft
Thursday morning and has dropped over 6 ft since then. Water levels
as of 5 pm Thursday were at 20.1 ft at the USGS river gage, and are
continuing to come down. Water levels will continue to recede
through Thursday evening. For reference, the crest of this release
is similar to river levels as of last years outburst flooding event.
The USDA Forest Service has reported to NWS of a failure of a dike
along the river. This failure is producing damaging impacts to the
Fish Creek Bear Viewing area. Stay away from the flooded area.
Another potential impact area for this event is the road from Hyder
to Premier, Canada at around mile point 9 along the Salmon River.
Be aware of debris in the water. Very cold water will increase the
threat of hypothermia. Please report any observed impacts or damage
to the National Weather Service.
