...TYPHOON SINLAKU MOVING SLOWLY NORTH THROUGH THE NORTHERN CNMI... .NEW INFORMATION... A Tropical Storm Warning and Typhoon Watch have been cancelled for the island of Guam and adjacent coastal waters. .AREAS AFFECTED... This local statement provides important information and recommended actions for people in Guam and the Northern Marianas. .WATCHES/WARNINGS... A Typhoon Warning continues for Rota, Tinian, and Saipan. Although tropical cyclone watches or warnings are no longer in effect for Guam, possible impacts from related hazards are still a concern. A Flood Watch is in effect for portions of the Northern Marianas. Please listen closely for any Flood Warnings that might be in effect for your area. Please check the latest public and marine forecasts for detailed information about additional hazards. .STORM INFORMATION... At 2 PM ChST...the center of Typhoon Sinlaku (04W) was located near latitude 17.4N...longitude 144.5E. This was about 90 miles west of Alamagan, 95 miles west-southwest of Pagan, 120 miles southwest of Agrihan, 175 miles north-northwest of Saipan and Tinian, and 270 miles north of Guam. Storm motion was north, 355 degrees, at 4 mph. Storm intensity was 115 mph. .SITUATION OVERVIEW... The eye of Typhoon Sinlaku (04W) is moving slowly north and the eye is well north-northwest of Tinian and Saipan. Latest satellite imagery indicates that the storm center has just begun to shift toward the north-northeast. Typhoon Sinlaku has been slow to move out, and the TS wind field has expanded since earlier this morning. This kept the northern coastal waters of Guam just within the tropical storm force winds until just earlier this afternoon, and Saipan and Tinian are now just outside of the outer edge of the destructive tropical storm winds. Typhoon Sinlaku is now moving through the northern CNMI just west of Alamagan, Pagan, and Agrihan. As Sinlaku moves through the northern CNMI today and tonight, it is forecast to curve further to the northeast, passing north of Agrihan Friday. Typhoon Sinlaku is now centered 270 miles north of Guam and continues to pull away to the north. Guam and the adjacent coastal waters are now fully outside of the tropical storm force wind field, but tropical storm force gusts to around 45 mph look to continue into this evening, with even higher gusts possible near any passing shower. Dangerous surf of 12 to 17 feet are still occurring across south, west, and north facing reefs of Guam, driven by the southwesterly winds. The threat of coastal inundation is starting to diminish this afternoon, but minor coastal flooding of up to 2 feet will remain possible into the weekend along south, west, and north facing reefs of Guam, mainly along west facing shores and beaches due to the wind driven waves. Surf will be slow to decrease over the next few days as swell from Sinlaku continues to pummel northern and western Marianas shores.
Instruction:
. For those under a warning in Rota, Tinian, and Saipan, remain in a designated shelter or in a sturdy, fully reinforced concrete building to ride out the storm until winds have subsided and the "all clear" is given. Stay inside and away from windows. Do not venture outside when high winds are occurring as flying debris can easily cause serious injury. For those under a warning in the far northern Mariana Islands of Alamagan, Pagan, and Agrihan, preparations for the protection of life and property should have already been completed. People should be in a designated hardened shelter. Remain in shelter until the "all clear" is given. Closely monitor NOAA weather radio or other local news outlets for official storm information. Listen for possible changes to the forecast.
